Welcome

The extragalactic group is encouraging discussions around the idea of
merging the whitepaper led by Richards and the whitepaper led by
Jarvis into a single VLASS proposal.

Possibilities include
1) 2 tiers: medium-wide (~5k-13k sq deg @ 31-50uJy) + deep (10 sq deg @ 1.5uJy)
or
2) 3 tiers: wide (full sky @ 100uJy) + medium (~5-9k sq deg @ 39-50uJy) + deep (10 sq deg @ 2uJy)
with a total time of <~8000 hours for all combined. Where the wide
couldn't be deeper than 100uJy, and the medium or medium-wide would
have to have a depth of at least 50uJy.

Some questions for the group to consider include:
* Is it possible to design one or more of the tiers to allow
transient/variability science? (Hallinan whitepaper)
* Are there any design barriers to producing polarization
measurements? (Mao whitepaper)
* Would multiple epochs in different arrays make sense? (Myers
whitepaper)
* Agreed on the deep field or do others/more? (Wang whitepaer)
* Where to point the medium tiers? HSC and DES fields a priority?
* Should all tiers be in S, all in L, or a mix?

Figuring out exactly how much area and to what depth requires
answering some technical questions, which include:
* What is the correct overhead? 25% (Myers whitepaper) or
(x+10s)*1.06 where x is the exposure time (FIRST paper)? Does it
change for OTF vs. individual pointings?
* Does overhead become negligible for a deep survey (since the
exposure times can be as long as technically possible)?
* How many pointings are really needed per square degree? Is the
Myers whitepaper exactly correct (for S-band in particular where the
beam size changes considerably from 2-4 GHz) or just a ballpark?

If you would like to get more involved, please contribute to the discussion here
