Technical Issue - Deep Fields

The Extragalactic WG has requested evaluation of deep field options based on a number of criteria:

1) Prevalence of bright sources (potential impact on imaging quality?)
2) Elevation vs LST plots (schedulability?)
3) UV coverage and PSF plots (for configuration choice)

I believe Ian Heywood has volunteered to lead this assessment.

The DEEP fields are:

Note that the XMM-LSS field has been moved to avoid a bright optical transient. New field is centered at 2h 18m 00s, -7° 00' 00". See http://vela.astro.ulg.ac.be/themes/spat ... har_e.html.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this, Ian. This is terrific stuff.
Maybe I missed this, but are the beam properties calculated assuming a full track?

To calculate the dirty beams I make a Measurement Set with a central point source sky model that runs from the minimum to maximum LST range determined for each field assuming an antenna elevation limit of 8 degrees, and has 64 channels covering the band (1-2 for L-band, 2-4 for S-band). I then run clean in mfs mode with a single iteration and then grab the size of the fitted restoring beam out of the resulting image.

I've assumed since this is the deep tier and will require multiple visits per pointing that complete uv coverage can eventually be built up. I could probably make it a bit more accurate with information about known regions of the band that are routinely discarded e.g. due to satellites.
