How to Install the ALMA Observing Tool (ALMA OT)

- The ALMA OT v5.1 purports to work on Linux, Mac OSX 10.5 (Intel), and Windows.
Instructions for downloading and installing the ALMA OT are below:

  1. 1. [Linux, Mac, Windows] In order to run the OT, you must have Java 1.6 installed. To check this, open a terminal and type "java -version". If the java version is 1.5 or earlier, you will need to install or initialize version 1.6.0 or higher.

    1. a) [Linux or Windows] Go to the Sun Java SE downloads page (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp), scroll down to "Java SE Runtime Environment" and click on the Download button and follow the instructions.

    2. b) [Mac] Note you must be running OSX 10.5 on an Intel processor. (Java 1.6 does not (yet, if ever) work on the Power PC.) Open a Finder window, click on Applications, and open the Utilities folder, and then the Java folder.
Double click on Java Preferences. This opens a window with two boxes. The lower box is called "Java application versions". With the mouse, grab "Java SE 6 64-bit" and drag it to the top of the list in the lower box. That's it!

  2. 2. [Linux, Mac, Windows] Now you can install the OT.
Go to the web page: http://almasw.hq.eso.org/almasw/bin/view/OBSPREP/WebHome
scroll down to "User Stuff" and select the second item under user tests, i.e. the link to "UserTest5dot1". On this page are links to download the software, to a user manual, and info about tests that need
to be done. Scroll down to *quot;Download the OT from:" and click on the link underneath.

    1. a) [Linux or Mac] On the download page, you can either choose to use WebStart (which does most things automatically), or dowload a tarball and install everything manually. It's recommended that you use WebStart. Just click on WebStart and follow instructions.

    2. b) [Linux, Mac, or Windows] On the download page, choose the Tarball, and follow instructions.

There is a lot of information and links from the my NRAO ALMA Observatory Prep web page.
