Second ngVLA Technical Workshop

December 8-9, 2015
Socorro, New Mexico, USA

The NRAO is pleased to announce that a 2nd Technical Workshop for a next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) will be held at the Domenici Science Operations Center in Socorro, New Mexico on 8-9 December 2015.

Inspired by recent dramatic scientific discoveries and the enormous potential of emerging technologies, the astronomy community has initiated this discussion of a future large area radio-wavelength array that would open a broad swath of discovery space across astrophysics, from proto-planetary disks to the high-redshift Universe. The ngVLA is currently envisioned as having a collecting area of about ten times that of the Jansky VLA, an operating frequency range of approximately 1-115 GHz, and baselines of up to 300km.

Sander Weinreb (Caltech) hosted an inaugural ngVLA technical workshop, in collaboration with the NRAO, on 8-9 April 2015 with sessions on science opportunities and enabling technologies. The principal conclusion from this Pasadena workshop was that the technical requirements for achieving a scientifically transformational ngVLA demand only a plausible extrapolation of current technologies.

The 2nd ngVLA Technical Workshop will be broadly patterned after the first but will address additional key topics, with sessions focused on:

  • Operations concepts
  • Computing architectures
  • Time and frequency distribution, and
  • Data transmission

Registration for the 2nd ngVLA Technical Workshop is now closed.

The Socorro auditorium capacity for this Workshop is 90 persons. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, so please submit your registration as early as practical.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Socorro on 8 – 9 December!
