NAASC Conference and Workshop Support

by Dong-Chan Kim last modified May 13, 2020 by Loreto Barcos

The North American ALMA Science Center (NAASC) invites scientists to apply for funding in support of upcoming conferences and workshops. There is no restriction on the number of participants nor on the geographic location. Applications for meetings covering any wavelength and/or topic are welcome. Priority will be given to events that will highlight synergies with ALMA.

The NAASC will provide monetary funding (up to $25,000) to organize an inclusive event, encouraging the participation of students, postdocs, and early career researchers as well as promoting diversity within the scientific community. The NAASC will help to advertise the event and, if needed, it may also provide logistical support including hosting the conference by providing a venue (NRAO Auditorium, ~50 people maximum), setting up the website event, and handling registration. The main responsibilities of the awardees include:

  1. Submit a brief summary reporting on the impact of the event including: number and seniority of participants, noting the diversity of the attendees, event's website, a copy of the program, main highlights, etc. Report is due within 2 months after the event.
  2. Acknowledge the NAASC as one of the sponsors of the event.
  3. Provide a detailed description indicating how the funding was spent. Note that NRAO cannot provide funding to buy alcohol, and can only transfer money to an institution or vendor.

For this first announcement, applications could be submitted anytime for upcoming conferences in Calendar Year 2020. We received several applications and decisions were announced within 4-6 weeks of submission. Applications are now closed for FY2020. Applications for FY2021 coming up soon.

If you are planning an event and need advise developing your idea, or have further questions, please contact the NAASC at
