Dr. Dana Balser is a scientist working on the NRAO proposal processing system and data archives. He is also involved with the development of the GBT Dynamic Scheduling System (DSS).
Balser received his B.S. (Engineering Physics), M.S. (Physics) from the University of Maine in Orono, and his Ph.D. (Astronomy) from Boston University. He was a NRAO Jansky postdoctoral fellow in Green Bank, WV and joined the NRAO scientific staff in 1997. Balser was a GBT commissioning scientist and later was involved in several projects to improve the GBT performance that included the spectral baseline project and the precision telescope control system.
Balser's research focus is on measuring the abundance of elements to test theories of the Big Bang, stellar evolution, and Galactic chemical evolution. He also uses radio observations to study the physics of HII regions, ionized gas surrounding the most massive stars, and planetary nebulae, ionized gas surrounding evolved stars.
