GOALS Team Meeting

Date: September 16-18, 2025
Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location: NRAO Charlottesville, Auditorium
The Great Observatory All-sky LIRGs Survey (GOALS) collaboration consists of more than 40 international members, with two big concentrations of members in the West (UC, Caltech, IPAC) and the East US coast (STScI/UVA/NRAO), as well as collaborator in Europe and Japan. The GOALS group studies galaxy evolution at low-redshift, including the role of starbursts, active galactic nuclei, and mergers. Ongoing work within the collaboration includes the impact of young (< 5 Myr) star clusters on molecular gas, determining physical conditions in the ISM from molecular emission and absorption features, and linking these processes to ongoing black hole or stellar mass growth. These projects are all inherently multi-wavelength where ALMA, JWST, and the VLA data are crucial components.
The main goal of the meeting is to bring the GOALS collaboration together to Charlottesville, for a fully hybrid event to enable interactions and discussions of ongoing and future projects relevant for the GOALS team. Most importantly, this meeting will be used to highlight within the collaboration the role that ALMA has and will play in the study of low-redshift galaxy growth; this will build on recent JWST projects, where ALMA has proven to be highly synergetic, for example, in revealing the multiphase nature of outflowing gas. We plan to have a focus session
about ALMA and JWST Joint proposals, including a discussion of our recently accepted ALMA Large Program. This will be an opportunity for interactions between NAASC and GOALS members, and for the collaboration to learn more about upcoming ALMA upgrades such as the WSU.
