The New Era of Acoustic Imaging

 

Abstract

Sound cameras are becoming increasingly affordable, and while they have been niche industrial products, they could potentially become consumer products in the future. These devices are like a VLA but for sound. This talk will cover how a former NRAO REU summer student found himself having to apply many of the concepts he had been exposed to while trying to create an affordable sound camera beginning almost a decade ago. In the process, the talk will also highlight various fields where sound imaging could soon become an area of academic and consumer interest.

The NSF National Radio Astronomy Observatory and NSF Green Bank Observatory are facilities of the U.S. National Science Foundation operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc.
