Exploring the Dynamic Radio Sky with ASKAP/VAST

Abstract

The Variables and Slow Transients Survey (VAST) on the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is designed to detect highly variable and transient radio sources on timescales from 5 s to 5 yr. We present the survey description and observation strategy, with observations of ~2000 deg^2 of the Galactic plane every two weeks and ~10,000 deg^2 of the high-latitude sky every two months, allowing identification of new and rare classes of transients. We show select results from the first few years of survey data, focusing on polarized Galactic sources such as flaring stars, new pulsars, Galactic Center transients, and long-period radio transients.
