The Origins and Implications of Turbulence in Galaxies
Magnetic fields and turbulence are vital components of a variety of galactic physical processes, including cosmic ray transport, interstellar medium (ISM) structure formation and star formation. However turbulence is difficult to measure observationally and therefore simulations are vital for testing theories of ISM turbulence and gauging observational diagnostics via synthetic observations. In this talk I will discuss the origins of turbulence in galaxies via feedback and gravitational instability and how turbulence is connected to galaxy evolution in the context of the star formation rate, gas accretion onto galaxies, and galaxy gas fractions. I will also highlight how turbulence can be measured using new statistical diagnostic tools and how this opens up new avenues for understanding physical processes ranging from Milky-Way star formation to the non-thermal dynamics of the IGM/ICM.
