Pulsar Timing Array Datasets as Multimessenger Probes of Astrophysical Phenomena

Abstract

Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) serve as galactic-scale gravitational wave detectors, tracking variations in pulse arrival times over decades-long datasets. While gravitational waves are the primary target of PTAs, these datasets also capture a wealth of astrophysical phenomena, including intrinsic spin instabilities, variations in the interstellar medium, and solar wind fluctuations—each imparting time-correlated stochastic signals. We explore these signals from two perspectives: as noise sources that must be mitigated in gravitational wave searches, and as valuable astrophysical observables uniquely accessible through the simultaneous observation of many pulsars..
