Useful Information for Travelers

Climate 

November in Chile is springtime, and daytime temperatures in Santiago are in the mid-70s°F with an average low of 58°F.  San Pedro de Atacama is situated on a high plateau, 8,015 feet above sea level, and located just 62 miles from Calama, a major city served by El Loa International Airport. In November, daily high temperatures are around 78°F. Daily low temperatures range from 42°F to 45°F. Dressing in layers is essential to maintain comfort from early morning through the evening.


Language

Chilean Spanish has an extensive catalogue of slang and in this way, differs from other South American varieties of Spanish. It could take some getting used to, even if you’re a confident Spanish speaker. 


Entry Requirements (as of January 2024)

At the time of embarking to Chile, the person must comply with the following:

  • U.S. Citizens can enter Chile with a passport.

  • Proof of health insurance is no longer required. However, it is recommended to travel with health insurance. Please keep in mind that Medicare will not provide medical coverage in Chile.


Is a visa required?

U.S. citizens entering Chile must have a valid passport. U.S. citizens traveling to Chile for recreation, tourism, business, or academic conferences do not need to obtain a visa prior to their arrival in Chile. For travelers with passports from countries other than the U.S., please consult your embassy.
