Event Overview

Welcome to the “next-generation Very Large Array” (ngVLA) international science conference: Follow the Monarchs: A Journey to Explore the Cosmos at (Sub)milliarcsecond Scales with the ngVLA. This conference is designed to highlight and explore the novel scientific opportunities that will unfold with the unprecedented angular resolution and sensitivity capabilities offered by this new facility.

A variety of oral presentations and posters will be featured, with a special focus on the new science that will be possible at high angular resolution; the ngVLA will allow, for the first time, the detection of thermal emission at 1 mas angular scales, as well as unprecedented high fidelity imaging of non-thermal emission on scales less than 1 mas. Researchers within and beyond radio astronomy expertise are invited to engage in discussions, share insights, and start to plan the groundbreaking science that the ngVLA will make possible. We particularly encourage the participation of early career scientists, who will be the major users of this observatory.

Talks are expected to be recorded and made widely available.

Join us on this exciting journey as we prepare to unveil the mysteries of the cosmos in the next decade and beyond.

Morelia, Mexico

The conference will be in person and will take place in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Morelia (Mexico), a historical city strategically located between Mexico City and Guadalajara, between the 11th and the 14th of November 2024. During this month the city hosts an international film festival, an international music festival, and the highly-anticipated event of the "Day of the Dead" (Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). November is also the period of the year when the Monarch butterflies complete their migration journey from Canada and the US to the mountains surrounding the city of Morelia.

The venue, theatre Teatro Mariano Matamoros, is located on one side of the majestic Cathedral Catedral de Morelia. The theatre offers a delightful view of the downtown main square Plaza de Armas. The venue's central location offers access to restaurants, shops, and attractions. The traveling time between the Morelia International Airport (MLM)  and the venue is approximately 30 minutes. Airpot taxis are available at affordable rates. For more information, please see Travel and Local Logistics.

Child Care and Financial Support

Child care (Ludoteca bosque Cuauhtémoc for kids from 3 to 10 years old  and  babysitter on site for toddlers) will be offered and opportunities to request financial support to attend the meeting is available (see Travel and Local Logistics). The registration fee is reduced for students and postdocs.
