What have we learned about the Galaxy from Recent NIR/MIR Surveys?

Recently completed large-scale IR surveys such as GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, WISE, 2MASS, DENIS, MSX etc. have provided a wealth of new data on the structure and content of the Milky Way. These surveys are still being mined for new and often surprising insights into some old and unsolved problems. The richness of these data sets forces me to narrow the topics to only a few that can be adequately summarized in 50 minutes or so. I will discuss new advances in our understanding of:

1) Large-scale Galactic Structure

2) Infrared Bubbles

3) Star Formation (EGOs)

4) The Galactic PAH Distribution

5) Variable and Proper Motion Stars

Most of what I have to say is based on GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL data, augmented by radio and MIR data as needed.
