Gas without Stars in the Locak Group, and other Discoveries with the Green Bank Telescope

Very deep 21cm HI observations with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) have uncovered a group of clouds that lie between the galaxies M31 and M33but do not appear to be directly connected to either system and do not appear to contain stars. These are the most recent (and most puzzling) of a population of large gas clouds that are common around the galaxies of the Local Group. I'll discuss the properties and possible origins of this material and its implication for the evolution of M31 and the Milky Way. In addition, I'll give a brief discussion of the recent detection of neutral clouds in the wind from the Galactic Center, and review of some recent discoveries made with the GBT.
