Compact binaries in globular clusters

I will discuss the observational results that have piled up over the past decade that show the strong observational evidence for the existence of black holes in binaries in globular clusters.  I will do so with reference to both the historical arguments that suggested that these would be rare or non-existent, the more recent theoretical work that identifies the flaws in the historical work, and discussions of the implications for the recent discovery of a double-black hole with LIGO.
