Discussion of Dish Antenna Mechanical Designs in consideration of NGVLA needs

Abstract

While considering the mechanical designs for an antenna that might be useful to the NGVLA many opportunities and challenges are raised.  Although I will not advocate any particular designs , I  will outline some of the important features of an appropriate mechanical design.  The discussion will draw on my experience with BIMA antennas used at CARMA, the ATA antennas at Hat Creek, and the SKA prototype installed at Dominion ARO in Canada.  Topics will include reflector surfaces, support concepts, general optical configurations, mount designs, maintenance issues and other mechanical design issues.  The presentation will contain more conceptual statements than specific or detailed design information.
