Modern Radio Continuum Surveys and Data Processing Challenges

Abstract

Technological developments have led to a series of new and upgraded radio telescope arrays with, by various metrics, an order of magnitude improvement over their predecessors. Most of these next-generation facilities plan to devote a significant fraction of their observing time to large-scale survey projects, the first iterations of which are in some cases already complete. In this talk I will discuss the potential of modern radio continuum surveys, and the challenges associated with processing the huge quantities of data involved. The talk will have a broad-brush approach, and the primary motivation of it is to trigger discussion. May contain traces of opinion.
