Surveying the universe with CMB-S4

Abstract

The upcoming CMB-S4 ground-based survey experiment will map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the millimeter-wave sky to unprecedented precision. Using ~500,000 detectors observing from multiple telescopes in Chile and Antarctica, CMB-S4 will map the sky with excellent sensitivity at both small and large angular scales. The design is based on previous generations of successful CMB instruments, but must scale to an order of magnitude more detectors than any prior instrument. In this talk, I will discuss the techniques and challenges for these precision measurements, as we design CMB-S4 to meet strict sensitivity and systematic requirements across a wide range of observing bands (20 - 300 GHz) and optical powers.
