SKA: Status and Prospects

Abstract

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project will build the largest radio telescope in the world with telescope facilities deployed in Australia and South Africa covering a frequency range from 50 MHz to 15 GHz in its initial phase.  I will review the key science drivers for SKA and summarise the main elements of the design. The approval for the start of construction was given in 2021 and the project then entered a continuing phase of intense activity. I will outline the organisation of the SKA Observatory, the current status and schedule for the project and some of the residual design issues being addressed as SKA prepares for its first astronomical observations.
