The Giant Molecular Clouds in Magellanic Clouds

The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are the nearest galaxies to our own. The NANTEN  4m telescope located in Chile has been used to survey the molecular clouds in the two galaxies over the last 15 years. These surveys have revealed more than 300 resolved GMCs (giant molecular clouds) at a 40-pc resolution and allowed us to make a first statistical study on the evolution and formation of the GMCs. I will present the highlights of this study and discuss on the future prospects including high-resolution observations with ALMA.
