On Giant Radio Galaxies, the IGM and episodic behavior of AGN

Some radio galaxies are spectacular for their mega-parsec linear sizes. Besides questions related to how they attained the exceptional sizes these giant radio galaxies also allow a complementary probe of the ambient intergalactic medium on large scales. The talk takes a look at giant radio galaxies and how they are beginning to reveal insights into environments on large scales and happenings on much smaller scales. We take a closer look at some of our recent work related to the studies of the ambient WHIM using giant radio galaxies where source asymmetries are consistent with inhomogeneities in the external medium. On the other hand, the extended radio structures also reveal dramatic changes that AGNs undergo. This nascent field of AGN ‘long-term variability’ is searching for causes of the variability, the propagation of the new jets and the timescales involved. The AGN long-term behavior is well addressed by giant radio galaxies and I will present work we have carried out in this regard.
