National Radio Dynamic Zone

The original NSF-funded NRAO National Radio Dynamic Zone (NRDZ) project (2021-2025) supported (1) the development of an NRDZ concept definition, (2) design and development of prototype advanced spectrum monitor (ASM) devices, and (3) broader impact efforts related to spectrum awareness and spectrum management. This article (2018) appears to be the origin of the idea of an NRDZ.

Since 2021, NRAO has continued to expand its efforts in NRDZ, including a Spectrum Innovation Initiative (SII-NRDZ) grant (2022) and a SWIFT-SAT grant (2023). The SWIFT-SAT grant in particular focuses on the development of Operational Data Sharing, or ODS. The efforts begun with this NRDZ funding are now continued in Spectrum Management Special Projects (see information in those sections).

NRAO continues to participate in the organization of a national discussion about an NRDZ, especially through workshops like this one taking place at the IEEE 2026 RFID Meeting.
