ALMA Early Science and NAASC Community Outreach

ALMA Community Day Events

To prepare the North American community to fully participate in the Early Science (ES) call, the North American ALMA Science Center (NAASC) organized community outreach events in the months leading up to the Cycle 1 proposal deadline. In addition, the North American community was encouraged to propose and host ALMA Community Day Events (CDEs) at their home institutions. These CDEs are one to two day events organized and led by Community Day proposers with a focus on the Early Science capabilities of ALMA, mm/submm interferometry observing techniques, and the tools required to design ALMA observing programs and submit proposals. The NAASC supports these events by providing staff to describe ALMA ES capabilities and NAASC community support programs, and by leading brief demonstrations and/or tutorials on the ALMA ES user tools, including the ALMA Observing Tool for proposal generation and SIMdata in CASA for simulating observations.

A list of recent community outreach events are provided in the table below.

ALMA Cycle 1 Proposal Preparation Training Materials

The following is a summary of tutorial materials presented at the June 2012 proposal preparation webinar event. Cycle 1 proposers are also encouraged to read the ALMA Cycle 1 Call for Proposals, the Proposer's Guide and the ALMA Early Science Primer. A more comprehensive description of the Cycle 1 setup of ALMA is provided in the ALMA Technical Handbook.

The ALMA Observing Tool, a java application used for the preparation and submission of ALMA Phase I (observing proposals) and Phase II (telescope run files for accepted proposals), is available for download and installation at this link.

NAASC Community Outreach

To prepare the North American community to fully participate in the Early Science (ES) call, the North American ALMA Science Center (NAASC) organized community outreach events in the months leading up to the proposal deadline. The first of these events was at the American Astronomical Society (AAS) meeting in January in Seattle (see article in Feb, 2011 edition of NRAO eNews). A full list of community outreach events hosted during the 2011 March through current period are provided in the Table below.

ALMA Special Session at the 219th AAS

ALMA Cycle 0 Early Science and Capabilities for Cycle 1 Science have been presented at the 219th AAS. For details about the presentation, please click this link.

ALMA Community Day Events

Members of the North American community hosted ALMA Community Day(s) events. These were one to two day events organized and led by Community Day proposers with a focus on the Early Science capabilities of ALMA, mm/submm interferometry observing techniques, and the tools required to design ALMA observing programs and submit proposals. The NAASC supported these events by providing staff to describe ALMA ES capabilities and NAASC community support programs, and to lead brief demonstrations and/or tutorials on the ALMA ES user tools, including the ALMA Observing Tool for proposal generation and SIMdata in CASA for simulating observations.
